SUMMARY:Fundamentals for Startups: Lubica Lutz
DESCRIPTION:Fundamentals for Startups\, hosted by CoMotion Labs\, is open to anyone interested in learning about entrepreneurship and building a startup. From raising capital to scaling to exit strategies\, these presentations feature experienced entrepreneurs\, investors\, and industry experts who share startup-related information\, experience\, and insights. See our winter line up and register below. \nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER >>> \n\n\n\nLubica Lutz \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen you don’t need a perfect (startup) idea- you need empathy\n\n\n\n\n\nMost ideas don’t fail because they lack funding\, or ambition. They fail because they are built on assumptions about people. \nHuman-Centered Design (HCD) is a research-backed method that reduces risk early by shifting focus from finding the right solution to asking better questions. It uses empathy to learn directly from the people you aim to serve\, instead of guessing stakeholder needs. \nIn this 60-minute lecture\, Lubica Lutz introduces Human-Centered Design as a practical tool for moving ideas forward with clarity\, whether you are launching a startup\, translating research into impact\, or shaping a new program inside an organization. Empathy is no longer a “soft skill”. It is your strategic team-member. \nThe lecture is intentionally designed for a mixed audience: \n\nfounders and early startup teams\nresearchers and scientists exploring real-world application\nstudents\, public and first-time idea-makers\nemployees developing new initiatives within organisations (“intrapreneurs)\n\nNo prior startup or design experience is required — and experienced innovators will still gain sharper fast techniques\, and fresh perspective.

SUMMARY:Science in Medicine Lecture Series: Michael R. Bruchas\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 4\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nFoege South Auditorium (Genome Sciences) & Zoom Webinar \n \nNeural Codes of Arousal:  The Locus Coeruleus and Anxiety\n\nThe locus coeruleus (LC) is a central neuromodulatory hub that produces a large majority of the brain’s norepinephrine (noradrenaline).  The LC is known to powerfully shapes arousal\, stress responses\, and adaptive behavior. Dysregulation of LC function has long been implicated in anxiety and trauma-related disorders\, yet the circuit mechanisms by which LC activity produces distinct behavioral states have remained unclear. In this lecture\, I will present a body of work from our laboratory over the past decade that reframes the LC not as a unitary arousal system\, but as a structured network capable of encoding distinct arousal states through projection-specific activity patterns and local circuit modulation. I will discuss how peri-locus coeruleus (peri-LC) circuits gate LC output\, biasing neural codes toward transient versus persistent arousal and shaping avoidance-related behaviors under stress. Using recent rodent models with cutting-edge systems neuroscience methods\, including advances in imaging\, circuit dissection and neural decoding\, I will illustrate how maladaptive LC coding may contribute to features of pathological anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder\, such as hyperarousal and persistent avoidance. Together\, these studies provide a mechanistic framework for understanding how neuromodulatory circuits generate innate behavior\, how they adapt\, and how the brains adrenergic system contributes to maladaptive behavioral states.  The translational implications for these studies will aide in developing more targeted treatments for anxiety and trauma-related disorders. \nAbout the Speaker\nMichael R. Bruchas\, PhD\nProfessor\nCenter for the Neurobiology of Addiction\, Pain\, and Emotion\nProfessor of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine and Pharmacology\nUniversity of Washington\, Seattle\, WA \nMichael received his BS in biology and his PhD in pharmacology from Creighton University in 2004 and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience at the University of Washington\, where he examined how endogenous opioids impact stress\, depression\, and addiction. Dr. Bruchas’s laboratory focuses on how brain circuits are wired\, how they communicate via GPCR – mediated neuromodulation\, and to develop new neuroscience tools to aide in that process.  His laboratory’s discoveries have been published in Nature\, Science\, Cell\, and Nature Neuroscience\, Neuron and have been featured on Public Radio\, in The Wall Street Journal\, Nature\, NBC News\, The New Yorker\, The Smithsonian\, and Popular Science along with many international popular science publications.  He has awards including the NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award\, an NIH EUREKA Award\, the Young Investigator Award from the International Narcotics Research Conference\, and multiple NIH BRAIN Initiatives for tool development in dissecting brain circuits.  In 2018\, he was awarded the NIH-MERIT award from NIDA\, the Rising Star Award from the Mahoney Institute of Neuroscience\, and the SfN – Jacob P. Waletzky Memorial Award for cutting-edge research in addiction.  Dr. Bruchas is also a co-founder of a neurotechnology company Neurolux.  Dr. Bruchas resides with his wife and daughter in Fremont (Seattle) and loves travel\, food\, craft beer and wine\, all types of music\, books\, the outdoors\, and cycling.

SUMMARY:Bioscience Careers Seminar Series: Kelsey Lynch\, Brass Tacks Insights
DESCRIPTION:The Bioscience Careers Seminar Series is back by popular demand! Now led by the PhD Ambassadors in collaboration with the Office of Research and Graduate Education and Life Science Washington\, the series will allow graduate students to explore careers and build professional connections with biotech and pharmaceutical companies within Washington state. PhD training prepares you for many different jobs\, both inside and outside the academy. During this year’s Bioscience Careers Seminar Series\, we’ll highlight experiences of scientists who’ve transitioned from their PhD to various careers in one of our local companies. \n* To encourage networking and community building\, all sessions will be held in person at the UW SLU campus; recordings will be posted\, at a later date\, on the RGE website. \nAbout the Speaker \nKelsey Lynch\, Ph.D. is a senior consultant with Brass Tacks Insights\, a small but mighty competitive intelligence consulting group based in Seattle. At Brass Tacks\, Kelsey assesses evolving clinical data\, regulatory and business strategies for new oncology therapies to enable biotech and pharma company clients to efficiently and intelligently reach cancer patients in need. \nPrior to joining BTI\, Kelsey spent 3 years as a senior scientist developing in vivo-generated CAR T cell therapies at Umoja Biopharma\, a Seattle-based startup. Before transitioning to industry\, Kelsey trained at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center as a postdoc in virology and as a molecular biology grad student at the University of Washington. Outside of work\, Kelsey spends as much time away from a computer screen as possible by skiing\, cycling\, or hiking with a group of close female friends working in various biomedical fields self-dubbed “The Lady Doctors”.
