SUMMARY:Diversity in Clinical Trials Policy Info Session
DESCRIPTION:The University of Washington is implementing new reporting requirements for clinical trials subject to the UW Diversity in Clinical Trials (DCT) policy. These changes support compliance with Washington State’s Diversity in Clinical Trials law (RCW 69.78) and aim to improve the completeness and quality of enrollment data for underrepresented populations. \nKey Details: \n\nApplies to new clinical trials subject to the UW DCT policy that are submitted to HSD on or after January 1\, 2026.\nEnrollment data must be reported using OnCore\, UW’s Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS).\nClinical trials reporting solely for compliance with the UW DCT policy have reduced reporting requirements.\nClinical trials that are already required to report in OnCore (e.g.\, oncology studies\, studies with UW Medicine billable activities) should adhere to those more robust reporting requirements. For these study teams\, no additional training will be required under the DCT pathway.\n\nCompliance Monitoring: \n\nEnrollment data\, or an indication that no enrollments occurred\, must be entered at least annually.\nCTMS will run monthly reports to identify studies overdue for data entry.\nStudy teams not meeting these reporting requirements will be referred to HSD for follow-up.\n\nUpcoming Webinars: \nTo support onboarding\, the CTMS Program Office will host informational webinars on: \n\nDecember 12\, 2025- 12:00-1:00 PM PT- Register\nJanuary 14\, 2026- 9:00-10:00 AM PT- Register \n\nFor questions contact CTMS@fredhutch.org or hsdinfo@uw.edu.

SUMMARY:Science in Medicine Lecture Series: Alex Meeske\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 11\, 2025\n11:00 am – 12:00 pm\nFoege South Auditorium & Zoom Webinar \nPhage transcription factors that silence CRISPR-Cas immunity\nBiography \nDr. Meeske earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Connecticut. He then conducted his PhD studies with Dr. David Rudner at Harvard Medical School\, where he studied the processes by which bacteria construct their protective envelope (the cell wall). He went on to do postdoctoral work with Dr. Luciano Marraffini at The Rockefeller University\, where he investigated the complex immune systems used by bacteria to protect themselves from viruses. One of these immune systems\, called CRISPR\, has been exploited for precise and programmable DNA editing in a wide range of organisms – an approach with curative potential for many genetic diseases. At UW\, Dr. Meeske’s group has continued to explore the functions of bacterial immune systems\, how viruses have evolved to overcome them\, and how we can leverage these processes to develop new biotechnology tools. His Science in Medicine Lecture will cover the diverse molecular mechanisms by which Listeria phages inhibit CRISPR immunity.

SUMMARY:Seventh Seattle Symposium in Biostatistics: The role of causal inference in biomedical data
DESCRIPTION:The role of causal inference in biomedical research: dare we speak of ‘effect’? 4-Day Online Symposium\nThe field of causal inference has seen a massive expansion in recent years and is now one of the most active areas of biostatistical research. The concepts and tools developed in causal inference are intended to support practitioners in their quest for evidence on causal relationships\, often critical for scientific progress. While powerful\, these tools can also be easily misunderstood or misused — this has made some biostatisticians and epidemiologists apprehensive of the growing prominence of the field. \nThe symposium will address: \n\nHow causal inference can be leveraged to inform the design and enhance the analysis of observational and randomized studies\, including combinations of both\nHow causal inference has stimulated the integration of machine learning into statistical inference\nHow causal inference provides clarity on assumptions that suffice to infer causality from different study designs and informs strategies for sensitivity analyses.\n\nDetails \n\nDates: Saturday\, November 22 – Tuesday\, November 25\, 2025\nFormat: Online\nTime: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. PST each day\nShort courses: Select full- and half-day online short courses will be offered Saturday November 15 and Sunday November 16\, 2025. SUMMARY:PNRI: Science Matters Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Computational Early Cancer Genome Analysis at a National Scale with Isidro Cortés-Ciriano\, PhD \nThe Cortés Ciriano Group develops experimental and computational tools to decipher the mechanisms driving cancer genome complexity and evolution\, with the goal of improving early detection and treatment strategies. This seminar will highlight recent advances including the discovery of a new rearrangement process\, loss-translocation-amplification (LTA) chromothripsis\, which drives rapid cancer progression; the development of SAVANA\, an algorithm that detects complex structural variants using long-read sequencing; and a new plasma DNA sequencing technology for accurate cancer diagnosis\, monitoring\, and early relapse detection. \nThis virtual event will include Dr. Cortés-Ciriano’s presentation plus Q&A with the audience. Register today for free! \nPNRl’s Science Matters seminars highlight exciting research in genetics\, genomics\, and evolutionary biology with important societal impact. Topics include research on the genetics of ethnically diverse populations\, diseases afflicting vulnerable or underserved groups\, and efforts to expand the diversity (broadly defined) of research subjects or the scientific workforce. The seminars are open to the scientific community\, and anyone interested in learning more about genetics. \nLearn more about PNRI on their website pnri.org.
