The goal of this workshop is to prepare post docs to apply for academic positions in biosciences by providing resources to understand and prepare job applications, gain teaching and mentoring experience, and build communication and job-seeking skills.

This four-week series includes a one-day, in-person event on career development followed by three online sessions.

This in-person, four-day program is for postdoctoral bioscences researchers from outside the University of Washington who are committed to inclusive teaching, mentoring, and lab leadership. The workshop is designed to encourage academic careers from traditionally underrepresented U.S. demographic groups and is open to individuals of any ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, ability, veteran status, socio-economic status, first generation to college status, and religion.

The UW Medicine Inventor of the Year award honors outstanding UW scientists whose inventions have had a major effect on both human health and our local economy.

The School of Medicine Hooding ceremony acknowledges the achievements of students receiving doctoral degrees from the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Each year the School of Medicine hosts a reception to welcome first-year Ph.D. graduate students. Program chairs, graduate program leadership, senior faculty and second-year students are also invited to join in welcoming the incoming first-year students. A buffet dinner is served and each first- year receives a welcome gift. The Vice Dean of Research & Graduate Education gives a speech and a second-year student is selected to share a few “words of wisdom” about their first-year experience.

Since its launch in 1976, the Science in Medicine Lecture Series has recognized the School of Medicine faculty research achievements and provided an opportunity for researchers to explore topics outside of their immediate fields.

The Science Teaching Experience Program (STEP) is an educational opportunity that engages a diverse pool of postdoctoral fellows in a closely mentored apprenticeship to learn how to teach scientifically with inclusive, demonstrably effective, student-centered pedagogies.

Since 2018, Gonzaga University (GU) and the UW have provided to GU undergraduate students research-related experiences during the summer at the UW in Seattle, Washington. The Program provides enrolled GU undergraduate students with summer volunteer experiences within the research-intense environment found at the UW. During this research experience, Program Participants explore their fields of interest, make valuable connections and experience being part of a research group that includes graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and principal investigators. These research experiences will be particularly beneficial to Program Participants who may be considering additional educational opportunities, including graduate school at the UW or another research university.
