Education & Training at UW Medicine

The UW School of Medicine (SoM) provides advanced scientific training for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in biomedical research. The Office of Research & Graduate Education partners with the University of Washington Graduate School, Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS), the Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC), and many other offices within the university to provide training and educational opportunities.

Training & Programs

  • Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship Certificate: The Buerk Center’s certificate in entrepreneurship prepares University of Washington graduate and PhD students for the world of start-ups and new technology enterprises. The certificate’s emphasis on cross-campus involvement means you’ll take entrepreneurship courses alongside students from other disciplines, work with UW inventors on their market-ready applications, and have the opportunity to apply for fellowships in UW technology ventures or local angel funds.
  • Clinical Laboratory Leadership and Management Certificate: This online certificate program through the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology is designed to enhance your laboratory leadership and management skills in a clinical laboratory through three 10-week courses that you can complete at your own pace. By adopting a leadership and management mindset, practicing strategic thinking, embracing innovation, and investing in change, you’ll develop the necessary knowledge and skills to optimize your laboratory’s operations and improve team satisfaction. Moreover, this program will prepare you for the next stage of your career by equipping you with the expertise and confidence to tackle new challenges and take on greater responsibilities.
  • Graduate Certificate in Ethics: The Graduate Certificate in Ethics aims to facilitate graduate research in ethics as it arises across disciplines. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary groundwork for pursuing ethics scholarship as it relates to their field of study. The curriculum is designed to accommodate diverse student interests and to facilitate cross-disciplinary conversations and scholarship.
