Shelly E. Sakiyama-Elbert, PhD, is the Vice Dean for Research & Graduate Education (RGE) and Professor of Bioengineering in UW Medicine School of Medicine.
As Vice Dean, Shelly leads UW Medicine’s interdisciplinary and translational research efforts. She oversees the educational experiences for graduate students (masters and PhD programs) and research postdoctoral scholars and fellows in the School of Medicine.
Her research focuses on drug delivery, biomaterials, and cell transplantation for regenerative medicine. Her main area of interest is the treatment of peripheral nerve and spinal cord injury. She studies the use of biomaterial scaffolds as platforms for the delivery of growth factors and transplantation of neural progenitor cells.
