Harborview Campus

Harborview’s research enterprise reinforces the UW School of Medicine’s commitment to high-quality care, teaching, community service, and discovery.
Harborview-based faculty secure more than $240 million annually in research and training funding and conduct a broad portfolio of translational and basic science research, clinical studies and treatment trials, epidemiology, and health services research. Key scientific strengths include cell biology, neurosciences, vascular biology, inflammation, infectious diseases, lung biology, and microbial pathogenesis.
The Harborview research environment is centered in the Harborview Research & Training Building and the Ninth & Jefferson Building, which are jointly operated by the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center. These facilities provide wet laboratories, tissue culture space, shared research resources, vivarium space, faculty offices, meeting rooms, and training space for Harborview-based investigators. Additional clinical and outcomes research programs are distributed across the Harborview Medical Center campus, supporting a wide range of interdisciplinary work.

Several major research programs and institutes are also housed at Harborview, including the Department of Global Health, the Center for AIDS & STD, the Kidney Research Institute, the Eye Institute, WISH (WWAMI Institute for Simulation Healthcare), the Memory and Wellness Research Center, and the Neurosciences Program. Northwest Biotrust/Biospecimen at Harborview supports access to high-quality annotated human biospecimens for research. The Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC), a nationally recognized, collaborative center focused on injury prevention, education, training, and outreach is housed in the Patricia Steel Building.
