Research programs at HRT/3NJB
Lab-based research includes cell biology, neurosciences, vascular biology, inflammation, infectious diseases, lung biology and microbial pathogenesis. Research laboratories are located in the Harborview Research & Training (HRT) Building and the Ninth & Jefferson Building, floor 3 (3NJB). These buildings, operated through the joint efforts of the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center, provide laboratory facilities and research offices for HMC-based faculty. The following research centers are housed within these two buildings:
Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions

The mission of the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions (GIBHS) at UW Medicine is to improve the health for the millions of people at risk for and affected by mental health, substance use and other brain health disorders.

The goal of the Retrovirology Lab is to understand viruses – how they are transmitted, how they evolve, and how they affect their hosts, using a wide range of techniques including next-generation sequencing, culture models and screens, and biochemical/biophysical characterization of viral gene products. The lab’s research is tightly integrated with the clinical laboratories of the University of Washington Medical Center.
