Carleen Ratcliffe

Carleen Ratcliffe, Ed.D. serves as the Senior Graduate Education Specialist for the Office of Research and Graduate Education (RGE).

Carleen has worked in higher education since 2014, and brings a wealth of experience working with undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. She completed her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education and Higher Education Administration at Johns Hopkins University in 2023, with a research focus on improving first-year college students’ mental health by increasing their social capital and sense of belonging on campus.

Her professional background includes work at Seattle Children’s, University of South Carolina, Seattle University, and the University of Washington. She also currently serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Johns Hopkins School of Education, conducting research and teaching a variety of research courses such as Socially Responsible Research, Research Methods I, and Disciplinary Approaches to Education.

In her role as the Academic Programs Manager in the UW Department of Health Metrics Science immediately prior to joining RGE, she worked in support of the MS and PhD programs offered by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). Her interests and training are in student social capital, belonging, well-being, and access to education.

As the School of Medicine Senior Graduate Education Specialist, Carleen partners with SoM and interdisciplinary graduate programs to provide resources and guidance in areas related to research education and training for both graduate students and research postdoctoral scholars. She works closely with the Associate Dean for Research Education and Training to develop and offer trainee workshops and seminars, support the programs in their recruitment goals and admissions processes, and administer scholarships and fellowships.
